Step by step, day by day, I
have taken care to continue bettering my life. Yes, there are ups,
and downs. This is a journey after all, and lets face it, there can be many times when your motivation to keep going just simply isn't there. There are a few ways that I use to stay motivated, and I want to share them with you.
When I feel like I'm lacking motivation, or need an extra spark. I often search the web for motivating articles, or websites that will give me the extra umph I need. For example, I spent the a good portion of my day reading articles from Steve Pavlina. I honestly don't
think he updates his website at all anymore, but his advice is
timeless, and the value in them does not diminish with time. I equate
this value with truth. Truth is the same yesterday, today, and
forever. It does not, and will not ever change. Its value is above
and beyond anything else. As a matter of fact, anything else has has
no value whatsoever, so in reality, truth is the only valuable thing
in existence. That being said, if you have the time or inclination,
check out his website. You don't have to agree or believe in anything
he has to say, but there are gems of truth that I have found to be
very helpful and inspiring in many of his articles.
I also find it very
motivating to track my progress over time. In order to do so, you
actually need to keep some sort of log or journal with enough details
that help you measure progress over time. If you own a blog or
website, then this is easy enough to accomplish because the
statistics are generally just a click away, and there are tools like
Google Analytics which take many aspects of your site traffic into
account to give you meaningful data.
I've also undertaken a body
transformation goal where I am lifting weights 4 times a week with
the goal of changing my body composition to something that is more
appealing to the me that I am becoming. Keeping track of my weight
lifted, time in the gym, and generally how I feel during, and after
workouts are almost as easy as keeping track of website data. In this
case though, a little bit more effort is required. While in the gym,
I write down the weight, and reps of each set I do, and then use a
tracking app like BodySpace to keep the history for me. I also track my diet with myfitnesspal.
No matter what it is that
you are trying to accomplish, there is a way that you can keep track
of it. From keeping a journal, tracking statistics, taking progress
photo's, asking people's input periodically, and whatever else you
may think of. These tool's are important to help keep you motivated,
and are also useful to help set and reach your goals as you look back
on what you've accomplished to date. You may even find that you will
begin to automatically set new goals from the information that you
gather. As tedious as record keeping may sound, it is something that
anyone who is serious about making changes in their life cannot
afford to go without.
There are many ways to stay motivated, and I've just mentioned a few. Here are some things that can help summed up for you:
- Reading inspiring/motivating articles, books, interviews etc...
- Keeping track/records of your progress
- Talk to people who are knowledgeable about your goals
- Visualize your goals in your minds eye, and feel as if you've already accomplished them
- Create a "Vision Board" that has a depiction of your goals/desires in a place you spend a lot of your time
Here is a picture of my Vision Board if it helps you get an idea for one:
